A simple conversation can open the biggest doors
Road to faith is not always smooth – see Conversation Exchanges

5 Lessons
You have to stay close to Jesus on your faith journey. The woman did not leave when she was questioned or had questions. She endured the conversation.
Have and open heart – hear
Crave salvation
Let go of the world (the old water pot)
When you’re in BE ALL IN

Sometimes when we examine John 4 we get caught up in details about her and her character while not seeing the big picture – Jesus was giving hope. She was smart, curious, and bold while also being broken and lost. She stayed close and she listened.  Live a life of faith that is intentional, active, and life changing when shared. Kill your inaction.

Ephrem the Syrian
“Jesus came to the fountain as a hunter...He threw a grain before one pigeon that He might catch the whole flock... At the beginning of the conversation, He did not make Himself known to her, but first she caught sight of a thirsty man, then a Jew, then a Rabbi, afterwards a prophet, last of all the Messiah. She tried to get the better of the thirsty man, she showed her dislike of the Jew, she heckled the Rabbi, she was swept off her feet by the prophet, and she adored the Christ.”
Are You Thirsty?
Rev. 22:17 - And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

Sanctify Them Through Your Truth

There were twin brothers: Truth and Lie. They stood next to a river outside of town. Lie challenged Truth to a race claiming he could swim faster than truth. Lie laid out the rules that they would both remove all of their clothes, he would count to three then they would dive into the freezing cold water and swim to the other side of the river and back. Lie counted to three. But when Truth jumped in, Lie did not. He put on Truth's clothes and walked back into town. He made a big show as he walked around town pretending to be Truth. When Truth made it back to shore he could only find Lie's clothes. He didn't want to put on Lie's clothes so Truth walked back to town naked. People stared and glared as Truth walked through town. He tried to explain what happened and that he really was Truth. The people made fun of him and wouldn't go near him. They wouldn't believe he was really Truth. The people in town chose to believe Lie because he was dressed appropriately and easier to look at. From that day on people have chosen to believe a Lie rather than a naked Truth.

Using this old tale Kason, illustrates how we typically ignore the truth of Jesus and falls for the lies presented by society, because it is better looking or more in sync with man's ideas.
Psalms 24:4-5 - He who has clean hands and a pure heart,    who does not lift up his soul to what is false    and does not swear deceitfully.5 He will receive blessing from the Lord    and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

John 3:21 -  But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John 8:37-38 -  I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

John 8:28 - So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.

John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 17:17 - Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

John 16:7-11 - Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Ephesians 4:21-25 - 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self,[a] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

John 20:30-31-
The Purpose of This Book
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

By the time of the writing of his gospel John was an old man. He could remember being called to follow Jesus, the feeding of the 5,000, Lazarus coming out of the cave, and cries of the crowd as Jesus was crucified. John could recall seeing Jesus ascending into the clouds. There were at this time already the gospels by Mathew, Mark, and Luke. But John saw that something was being missed by the readers of the other accounts.
John wants you to know Jesus, such that you may believe and have everlasting life. John's gospel uses some words more repetitively than any other gospel because of this upward focus.
John looks at Jesus's identity and the work of Jesus.
John looks at Jesus through the lens of eternity - John 1:1-4
John looks at Jesus through the lens of divinity  - John 8:28
John looks at Jesus through the lens of creation - John 1:10
All of this comes together such that we should see that Jesus came to earth for us that we may receive eternal life.

Eternal Life
5 Realities that must be true if you want eternal life:
You must have a new birth - John 3:1-8, Heb 4:13
Modern often charismatic term is “born again”
Ez 36:25-27 Jesus’ meaning of baptism Mk 16:16, Acts 2:38, 1 Pet 3:21, Rom 6:3-5
Jn 1:10-13 born of water and spirit
Cornelius was “good” but was told to find Peter to be told what he needed to do
Gal 3: 26-29
Gal 5: 22-33 (results of new birth)
Recognition of Spiritual Truths
Jn 3:9-15
Even Nicodemus didn’t recognize the truth and he was “the” teacher of the times
A lot of times people we try to reach have a failure the see the truth
Rom 7:7-8
The “natural” person is hostile to spiritual truth
1Cor 2:14
What we need to know to experience eternal life is to recognize Christ and who he is. Obedience to Him
Lk 24-27 – Jesus is our teacher
Jn 12: 32 If you want eternal life recognize and look to Jesus just as the Israelites looked to the staff. We’ve been bitten by the poisonous snake of sin and unless we commit to belief and faith in Christ we are lost
Is 45:12-22

The real reason(s) for condemnation
Jn 3: 16-21
Why do people go to hell? Because they turn away from God and CHOOSE to go there.
Ez 33:11
People will be condemned because they choose to ignore Christ’s invitation.
People will be condemned because they love the darkness more than the light.
Until we realize WE are the reason for our OWN condemnation and change we will be lost. Everyone who goes to hell CHOSE TO GO THERE.
Realize Jesus’ place of preeminence
Jn 3:22-30
We must decrease so Jesus can increase
We should be very careful to not live our lives in such a way as to draw the spotlight to us and away from Christ
Col 1:18
To truly live we must give more of ourself away
Ps 115:1
Gal 6:14
Receiving Jesus’ Testimony and Obeying
Jn 3:31-36
V36 believe (Heb/Gk word is Obey)
V36 “hs” (will receive)
Your reality has changed in the present when you obey Christ

But do we place a lot of attention on Christ?
Let people hear about the church of Christ and the Christ of the church!
We have to buck the world's thoughts of church of Christ as a denomination
Young people need to fall deeply in love with Christ properly, not just memorize

Submitting to His Lordship like Mary, the Mother of Jesus
Lk 1:38
Faith that made her willing
Servant of God
Lk 2:35
She would suffer
Lk 2:48
Was she angry?
Lk 2:51
Cherished and committed to memory

Acts 1:14 devoted to prayer with the disciples after his ascension

Three things to consider when submitting to His Lordship – it is so much more than just baptism. There is a burden, a benefit, and a bargain
The Burden
The burden of Biblical submission – arranging yourself under another’s authority is very difficult for most to do. We cannot be our own boss and submit.
Matt 16:24 deny self and “take up your cross” death to self
Your life is no longer your own
You agree your wants and desires ambitions priorities DON’T MATTER
Matt 6:33 there will be sacrifices – going where you want, movies, books, language/conversions, you body (alc, drugs, gluttony, casual sex), clothing 1Tim 2:9
1Cor 6:19-20
We have to care more for our and the souls of others
You might be an outcast in life (work, school)
You can’t retaliate when provoked (i.e. traffic)
Matt 5:39
Submission is a lifelong endeavor of small as well as big sacrifices; you might have to separate from loved ones/relationships that are not scriptural
Titus 2 we are expected to teach
Heb 10:25 faithful attendance
2Tim 2:15 study on your won
Give back to God $$ and NOT your leftovers or 2nds
Mal 1:10 failure to actually worship
You should “feel” a sacrifice (is it real if you don’t feel it)
Eph 5:22 even if his idea stinks he has the final word
Submit to the eldership
The Benefit
1 John 5:11 eternal life
2 Thess 1:8=9 spared
Be in God’s presence
Sing praises
God will see you
Reunions with family
If promise of Heaven were the only benefit it would be worth the burden
You will never be alone/feel alone – you have Christ
No heartache, no tears in Heaven
Phil 4:7 (here)
Blessed with a new family in the church
Identity and purpose
Matt 20:19-20  Ecc 12:13
Col 3:4 He isn’t just an important part of your life; He IS your life
You have a purpose and a job
John 5:28-29 you know what will happen
Greater quality of life; God knows what is best, his rules benefit and protect us
Bargain
If we agree to and abide by the “burdens” mentioned it still wouldn’t be enough.
The “bargain” is that Jesus paid our debt for us. Jesse chose debt so we can have the
“option” to submit and choose to do so. WE have the choice to accept the great bargain, the great deal that Jesus has to offer us.

Looking at John chapter 2
The Wedding at Cana
2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.[a] 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers[b] and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,[c] and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Jesus Knows What Is in Man
23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

Have you ever wished to witness some of Jesus's miracles. The book of John was written to show the reader that Jesus was the true messiah because of the signs ( or miracles) he performed and fulfilled.
In chapter 2 we see two of these signs which give evidence of his authority but also shows his mission.
Although it was not the fullness of time, still Jesus assisted with a small matter of life by the changing of the wine.
Jesus cleanses the temple of distractions, such that worship was the primary focus.
